Today’s announcement by Australian Transport & Energy Corridor Limited to commence construction of a 340 kilometre rail corridor between Moree and Toowoomba is great news for Queensland and great news for Australia.
The Border railway, built at a cost of approximately $900 million will connect with the existing standard gauge railway at Moree establishing a rail freight corridor to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
The National Party has been a great supporter of the inland rail project and we commend Mr. Everald Compton on his diligence to this project and call now for the completion of a high speed gauge between Gladstone and Melbourne to increase internodal port activities connecting Perth to Gladstone.
Connecting the coal of Queensland to the wheat of northern NSW to the manufacturing of Melbourne, creating a corridor of commerce in a straight line between ports, will allow Australians the opportunity to head west at an affordable price and set up business with access to all these commercial centres by reason of a standard rail gauge.
Toowoomba to Moree is a vital link and now we must look at other links such as Narrabri to Coonamble and Toowoomba to Gladstone and Toowoomba through the range to Brisbane. If we are a smart country that builds things then let us build an inland rail.
If people wish to reduce carbon emissions there is no better way to do it than to get trucks off the road and onto rail.
From my maiden speech when I entered the Senate I have seen this as a visionary project for our nation and I commend the hard work of Mr. Compton and note that no one can steal his thunder from his almost solo perseverance to see this project happen.

Dear Barnaby,
firstly I will advise I have been a member of ALP for over 30 years, and have always voted ALP in the house of Reps, but I have always been a swing voter in the senate.

I have for many years followed Mr Compton's passion to have a inland rail connecting interstate rail networks, and finally another vital link is on the way.
Well done Mr Compton, and to you Barnaby for you continued passion in supporting Qld first, over politics.
Please continue to vote and support Qld and Queenslanders in this fashion, you will continue to receive my vote.
Best wishes,
Michael Powell

Plaudits are required for at least some movement in the Melbourne to Brisbane rail link. It still amazes me as to why we have continuing studies into this project especially when investigations are being carried out by ARTC a private company under contract to the Federal Govt. A nose in the trough. I believe a push is on for the southern part of the proposal to go through Albury, Wagga, Cootamundra then on to Parkes. The ARTCs' proposal is then to head towards Werris Creek then north. What a joke. More money in their pockets. Infrastructure is already in place from Tocumal(a major container depot)to Narranderra. A dogleg currently exists from Finlay - Berrigan- Jerilderie. Construct a new line from Finley to Jerilderie about 35 Klms then new construction from Narranderra to Ardlethan about 60 Klms This would connect with the Griffith to Stockinbingal line. Construct a new turnout on the western side of Stockinbingal to join the Cootamundra to Parkes line. The southern extremity in Victoria could leave the existing standard gauge line (melb to Syd) at either Seymour or Benalla and connect at Tocumal. Already significant upgrade has been carried out between Dubbo and Coonamble this would then only necessitate connecting Coonamble to Narrabri then on to Narrabri. With the gradients and tunnells on the section of track between Wagga and Cootamundra known as the Bethungra Spiral, unless millions of dollars were spent on upgrades there is no way double stacked containers and 1800 metre trains would run on this section of track. It is also interesting to note that just prior to closing the Narrandera to Tocumal line a major ballastin programme was carried out from Narranderra to Morundah. In conclusion I must commend you. Its apity there isnt more of your like. Congratulations for standing up and not sticking to party lines
