Today’s re-announcement of Labor’s regional development programs confirms that the independents held out for 17 days for less money for regional Australia.
“Today’s announcement is a massive let-down for regional Australia”, said Senator Joyce today.
“The 1 billion Regional Development Australia Fund established today is less than the $1.2 billion Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program it replaces.*
“On an annual basis it’s even worse. This new fund is $200 million a year compared to $370 million per year under the old program.
“The money is not even guaranteed to go to regional Australia, with capital cities also able to apply. The largest allocation from Labor’s regional funds so far is $480 million for Perth.
"Not only has Labor slashed funding for regional Australia, they're also whacking regional Australia with a massive mining tax and a crippling carbon tax," Mr Baldwin said.
"Julia Gillard said when forming government she would 'draw back the curtains and let the sun shine in' - well now regional Australia can peek through the curtains and see they've been robbed.
"Labor's Minister for Regional Australia doesn't live in regional Australia and it shows.
"Those of us who do live in regional Australia won't be fooled by Labor's reheated spin," Mr Baldwin said.
“You have to carefully translate what Labor politicians say” Senator Joyce added.
“When they say I will not introduce a carbon tax under a government they lead, they actually mean I will introduce a carbon tax six months after they form government
“And when the prime minister says “I will deliver for regional Australia”, that means she will spend money on capital cities and less money on regional Australia.
“Nothing this government says can be trusted.
“The Government has also cynically reallocated $350 million of regional spending to flood reconstruction. The regional funds announced by the independents last year where for new and additional infrastructure not to replace damaged infrastructure, which is always government’s responsibility in any case.”

I think when the Prime Minister says "I will deliver for regional Australia", what she really means is:

"I will deliver up regional Australia to large corporations, once I have starved regional areas of funding. Only then will I deliver plenty of taxpayer funding to those who wish to take most of the food from the mouths of all Australians, and then charge them a fortune for the leftovers."

How does a Govt with such a slim margin get these things through?
Where is the opposition?

That's easy, Barry.

Labor, Greens and "Independents" combined have very slightly more than half of the seats in the lower house. Since none of them are allowed to vote against the ideas coming from the greedy corporate sector, the likelihood of corporates getting their own way is almost guaranteed, unless the electorate gives them a massive hiding they won't quickly forget.

This is why we must all be on their cases with threats of expulsion from their seats in the parliament on the next federal polling day.

I hope the likes of Oakshotte and Windsor are out on their ears at the next election, for the crime of NOT supporting regional Australia. In the meantime, voters must sock it to them at every opportunity.

At the same time, we must not tar all Independents with the same brush, as some people are doing elsewhere. However it is really important to find out what Independents support before voting for them. For example, some are "plants" passing preferences to The Greens.

On election days, people would be wise to collect all of the available how-to-vote cards to determine exactly where preferences are being passed, and even to ask the big question: "Why?"

At the last federal election, an Independent I was thinking of putting second ended up well down my list, after I found out she was passing preferences to The Greens. She also supported home births, which I think is a risk to both mothers and babies.
