The weekend has arrived and none would have envisaged how the events have unfolded in the last week. For so many Queenslanders and all Australians we watched in horror; it would change all our lives to some degree, some tragically.

Now is the time of comfort to the grieving, assistance for the homeless, help in the clean up especially for the elderly and infirmed and then we have to get the economy up and running so we can pay for the repairs. In the near future we will plan to do what we can to avoid this disaster from happening again.

Sly clauses in insurance contracts will be held in contempt. Those who loot will be caught and locked up. Towns out west will not be forgotten as new peaks keep towns that have been isolated for days isolated for weeks and towns on the flat far Western Plains isolated for months.

Health concerns now come to the fore- Ross River fever, Dengue in the far north, water purity, snakes, stray dogs, sandflies, mosquitoes and many other things that bite, sting and make you sick. Mould and mildew can have effects on asthmatics so get the house or flat clean and move wet furniture and coverings out.

The good news is everyone wants to help. This is the time, when circumstances are at their worst that human nature is at its best. That spirit that binds us together has more meaning and is more lasting than the State of Origin euphoria. This is the time when we can show we are more than isolated individuals, we are a nation. Better than any song or poem or sporting event is that part that says we are going use that strength inside of us to be mates and if my support can help you then you take and use as much as you need.

While we are reeling in shock at the horror of a wall of water hitting Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley, we must also spare a thought for the loss of income and assets of farmers and small businesses.

Along with mountains of topsoil and ripening crops being sent to hell in a hand basket, I have to wonder how we will have anything left to fill the food bowls of our kitchens.

The shops in Brisbane are running short of fruits, vegetables and bread with a knock-on effect on demand for canned and frozen foods, and staples such as flour, sugar, pasta, rice and powdered milk. Stock losses will also see a reduction of supply in Meat Departments.

I would like Barnaby to tell us how we are going to feed our State over the coming months, and what it's going to cost consumers. Perhaps he could ask this of the powers-that-be in the parliament.

After the floods have receded and the shock has worn off, I think Labor and Greens should be held to account for the flood problem being made even worse by their inaction on dams.

What if the govt were to have a scheme for such a disaster to help reestablish homes. If 5000 homes were totalled(say $100000 towards rebuild=500mill) and 10000 major repairs (say $40000=400mil) and another 10000 with minor repairs(say$10000=100mill) This is a total of $1Billion to help rebuild what insurance companies will not cover. Add to this the terrible losses of business including farmers - how about we pull a figure of 5bill out of the air. Now add on another couple billion for local councils. So about 7billion!!!!! Thats conservative.
Wouldn't that be a far better stimulus to have a disaster insurance like this operating and how many times could this be paid for instead of the waste on school halls, green loans, insulation, not to mention the NBN.&&**$$!!. Wow we really need that 36+bill to be thrown. Should we mention the billion on the desal plant at Tugun and the pipeline to nowhere and Traveston debacle.
A few billion doesn't sound much when bandied around by wasteful politicians but would go a long way to helping repair the annihilation seen in recent months across Qld.

Paul:

The government will never agree to do anything as sensible or patriotic as you might suggest. It will keep farmers and graziers on their own land, and fail to empower large corporations to rob us all.

As we all know, the Labor government is certainly not pro-Australia.
