While the massive clean-up of fire ravaged Victoria continues apace and we mourn the huge loss of life and property, large areas of northern Queensland are awash with floodwater. Some towns and businesses have been isolated for weeks and it could be many more weeks before towns such as Karumba and Normanton get anywhere back to normal. But that’s not to say half the state is closed for business. It’s important that we do what we can to support people who are trying to run their businesses and grow vital food supplies. I can’t be only one who is thinking how do we get that water down south where rivers are running dry. If Mr Rudd and his Labor Government had not gone on a borrowing and a spending spree, we could invest in the infrastructure to channel water to where it is needed.
My office has been informed of arrangements made by Telstra to restore services and assist customers in flood affected areas. Residential and small business customers who have been evacuated from their homes or who have had phone services affected by storms and flooding can call 13 22 03 to gain access to the Telstra Disaster Relief Package. This gives them free call diversion from a fixed line to another fixed line or mobile, mobile calls will be charged at fixed line rates and there will be free reconnections.
Red Cross, 1800 733 111, is distributing an Emergency
