New mobile coverage for Tamworth region

14 Aug 2018

Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, has welcomed the switch-on of three new mobile towers in the Tamworth region under the Coalition Government’s $220 million Mobile Black Spot Program.

These new mobile base stations at Duri, Piallamore and Warral were completed by Vodafone and are the latest of 37 sites across the New England to receive new or improved mobile coverage under the program.

“This is real delivery for the people of New England with 21st century, 4G communications now available in the palm of their hand whether they are at home, on the farm or on the road,” Mr Joyce said.

“There are close to 40 locations in our electorate alone and more than 860 sites across the country receiving increased mobile coverage through our program. It’s clear we’re making big ground on repairing the massive hole left by Labor who despite six years in Government, did not invest a single dollar into improving mobile black spots in regional Australia.

“In fact, our mobile program is the most significant one-time increase in mobile network coverage to regional and remote Australia delivered by a single public funding program in the history of mobile communications.”

Vodafone Chief Technology Officer, Kevin Millroy, said it was great to be investing in country communications in the region.

“Vodafone’s commitment to improving regional communications is ongoing and we have invested more than $10 million in the New England area since 2016 to boost mobile coverage and bring choice and competition to residents and businesses,” Vodafone Chief Technology Officer, Kevin Millroy, said.

Federal Minister for Sport, Rural Health and Regional Communications, Senator Bridget McKenzie, said mobile communications was integral for growth in the regions.

“The Mobile Black Spot Program is so important for our regions. This new infrastructure will enable those living in regional areas to participate in the digital economy and conduct business, as well as access important education and health services across the country,” Minister McKenzie said.

Other sites in the New England to receive new mobile infrastructure recently include Rocky Creek, Tabulam, Koreelah and Dungowan. The Coalition is committing $25 million for a fourth round of the Mobile Black Spot Program, delivering more coverage to regional and remote communities.
