New mobile base station for Pinkett

29 Mar 2018

Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, has welcomed the switch on of the Pinkett mobile base station which will deliver improved coverage for residents near Guyra and Glen Innes.

The Telstra base station is one of 37 new and upgraded towers being delivered under the Federal Government’s $220 million Mobile Black Spot Program (MBSP).

“These base stations are delivering tangible benefits to local residents at home and in business throughout the New England,” Mr Joyce said.

“From the front door to the farm gate, we’re connecting more people with better mobile coverage like never before.”

In recent months, more MBSP-funded sites at Balala, Baldersleigh and Kings Plains have also gone live in the New England.

Minister for Regional Communications Bridget McKenzie said the Government is committed to addressing Australia’s mobile black spots.

“This program is delivering new investment in mobile infrastructure across regional Australia and helping mobile carriers to service areas like Pinkett where it would otherwise not have been economically viable,” Minister McKenzie said.

Telstra Area General Manager Mike Marom said the new mobile base station at Pinkett delivers Telstra’s 3G and 4GX mobile data services to the area for the first time.

“We are proud to be part of this important initiative which extends the latest technologies across regional and rural communities, along major regional transport routes, and in locations prone to natural disasters,” Mr Marom said.

A total of 765 new base stations will be delivered under rounds 1 and 2 of the program to address black spots across Australia. The Government commitment includes $60 million to a third round of the program targeting 125 pre-announced priority black spot locations.

The competitive tender process for the Priority Locations Round closed in December 2017. Successful applicants and locations to receive funding are expected to be announced soon.
