New England Electorate students attend Schools’ Convention in Canberra

17 March 2016

The Deputy Prime Minister and the Member for New England Barnaby was pleased to meet with students from the New England Electorate attending the 21st National Schools Constitutional Convention in Canberra on Wednesday.

The Convention, which started as an initiative of the Constitutional Centenary Fund in 1995, is a three-day event that runs from Wednesday 16 March to Friday 18 March 2016.

Mr Joyce said about 120 senior secondary school students, most selected from feeder conventions conducted by the states and territories, will represent government, independent and Catholic schools from across Australia.

“I was particularly pleased to meet up with three young men from the New England Electorate, Armidale High School’s Alexander Snell, Inverell High School’s Declan Drake and Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School’s George Gardiner,” Mr Joyce said.

He said the student delegates consider topics that are designed to increase their interest in the operation of the Australian Constitution.  The topic of the 2016 Convention is ‘Education in a Federation'.
