Joyce praises new online cybercrime weapon to help Australians targeted by criminals

26 November 2014

FEDERAL Member for New England Barnaby Joyce is encouraging anyone who believes they have been the victim of cybercrime to make a report on a new, national online system.

He said as a wealthy and highly-networked nation, Australia is an obvious and attractive target for cyber criminals.

“The Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) allows the public to easily report instances of cybercrime,” Mr Joyce said.

“It is also a one-stop shop with advice for consumers and business on how to recognise and avoid common types of cybercrime.

“Currently, many instances go unreported because people either do not know where to report, or are reluctant to do so.

“The ACORN provides a secure means to report these incidents – no matter how big or small – and will refer these reports to the right law enforcement agency for consideration and possible investigation,” he said.

Mr Joyce said it was also crucial that we protect Australia’s digital economy, which is becoming a crucial driver of our economy and provider of jobs.

This Government is committed to ensuring a safe and prosperous Australia, where everyone can feel safe and secure. This applies equally to the online world as it does to our streets and suburbs.
