An exceptional woman; a champion of values; a pioneer of women in politics and leadership; a conveyor of country common sense; and a committed wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
These are the words attributed to the late Florence Bjelke-Petersen by the Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of The Nationals, Barnaby Joyce.
Mr Joyce said the passing of “Lady Flo”, as she was affectionately known, was an incredibly sad loss for the Bjelke-Petersen family; Queensland, Australia and The Nationals.
Mr Joyce said both Lady Flo and Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen were instrumental in his pathway to politics.
“They inspired me and they supported me and like so many Queenslanders I feel deeply for this loss. There is a real sense of sadness in the hearts of so many people today,” Mr Joyce said.
“As a Senator for Queensland, Lady Flo treated her position with dignity and resolve and she was an incredibly strong person in her own right.
“There was a great love in her relationship with her late husband and her family, and a great love and pride for Queenslanders no matter what walk of life and which side of politics they came from.
“She will always be a part of the iconography of The Nationals and of Australia.
“God bless Florence Bjelke-Petersen, may she rest in peace,” Mr Joyce said.
