Armidale’s presence on the regional stage took another step forward with the official opening of the $4.2 million New England Highway Roundabout.

Federal Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, said the new roundabout complemented recent improvements to the Armidale Regional Airport terminal, also funded with assistance of the Australian Government, and would provide a key link to the airport’s developing industrial precinct.

“This is about making sure the city of Armidale has the framework in place, like new roads and modern airports, to support it well into the future,” Mr Joyce said.

“Our policy of decentralisation is working with the APVMA opening in town just recently but if we are to grow as a region, we need the infrastructure to not only attract more people to the New England but retain them and their families for years to come.”

As the drought wears on, Mr Joyce said capital infrastructure projects such as this are also providing much needed investment for local communities.

“It is driving wealth back into our drought towns, helping to keep people in work and money ticking through businesses,” he said.

“With $140 million in upgrades planned for the New England Highway under the Coalition Government, it is all helping to build a corridor of commerce through the heart of our electorate.”

The Australian Government provided $1 million for Armidale’s new airport roundabout funded under the Infrastructure Investment Program. The NSW Government also provided $1 million and Armidale Regional Council a further $2.2 million.
