New England can celebrate Australian National Flag day on 3 September: Joyce

01 Sep 2014

FEDERAL Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce said the National Flag is an enduring symbol and with Australian National Flag Day on 3 September I encourage New England electorate constituents to get involved.

All Australians are encouraged to fly the flag on 3 September to remind us of the common pride we have in our nation,” Mr Joyce said.

“As Australia’s foremost national symbol it is appropriate we honour the place and importance of the Australian National Flag,” he said.

Mr Joyce said Flag Day celebrates the first time the flag was flown over the dome of the exhibition building in Melbourne in 1901, when Australia’s first Prime Minister, Sir Edmund Barton, announced the winners of a competition to design a national flag for Australia.

“I encourage individuals, community organisations, local authorities, businesses and schools of the New England Electorate to celebrate Australian National Flag Day by flying or displaying the Australian National Flag on 3 September,” Mr Joyce said.
