A MORE TRANSPARENT DEBATE ON ABORTION LAWS REQUIRED

The conjecture surrounding Section 282 of the QLD Criminal Code has come up for debate in the Queensland State Parliament. This issue demands prominent attention as it is one of the seminal, political and philosophical issues of our time. Even though the opposing sides may disagree strongly on their point of view, both would agree that this issue is one of the most emotional.

The right of one individual to own, and if required to terminate the life of another, is an issue that is not differentiated on by political parties, or by race, or by religion. Everybody knows somebody with strong views on either side of the abortion debate.

The key question that has to be answered is when does the right to nurture and protect include the right to terminate. At what point in time does this happen? It is overwhelmingly acknowledged that taking someone’s life as they stand in the street is morally wrong and beyond discussion. The person standing in the street is not an imminent or comparable threat to our own life. To do it to a child even though they may not be cognisant of their rights is reprehensible, deplorable and gathers the greatest opprobrium of any action when it is perpetrated.

So when does that action dissipate to one where not only is the destruction sanctioned but is paid for by the State. This is a debate that stirs emotions and can lose you friends but it should not be avoided, especially in the political sphere which is the mechanism for such a discussion to occur.

This is not a judgement about the past or things that may have occurred in the past. It is a debate about what we know now, what we feel and what we should do in the future. It demands the capacity to accept the past and the acknowledgment that we should change the future.

Thanks Barnaby for your comments on this important issue. As you say we all know someone who is passionate on this matter. I am passionately opposed to abortion (on demand or otherwise) unless there is clear evidence of serious health risk to the mother. There is ample evidence that other reasons are usually only for selfish or economic reasons which in my opinion cannot be justified and certainly should not be funded by the taxpayer. To allow a chld to be aborted "alive" and then left to die is both inhuman and in my opinion nothing short of manslaughter if not murder! There are many case histories of children who survived abortion proceedures and have gone on to become useful and self sustaining members of our human race. That is clear proof that we must always give our protection to the unborn or aborted child who is capable of living a valued life. Thanks for the opportunity to comment. Bill.

Hi Barnaby, I was very impressed when I heard your statement in the Senate regarding abortion. I was very encouraged to know that there are still strong voices in politics that stand up for the rights of the weak and voiceless. I generally find your contributions very refreshing and understandable, as opposed to what I often hear in the house or Reps and Senate. Much of the utterances in both the houses sound like cookie-cutter phrases that are being repeated ad nauseam. Keep up your good work! Cheers, Walter
