The Archies and Friends at Noosa

The Noosa Federation of the Arts presents The Archies and Friends, an exhibition of paintings submitted by Sunshine Coast artists who have entered the Archibald, Wynne, Moran and Sulman prizes from 7 July -16 July at Noosa Blue Resort.

Any Sunshine Coast artist that has entered any of these awards in 2009 is eligible to enter. This exhibition offers artists the opportunity sell their paintings, showcase their art and also chance to win the first prize of $2,000 and a People’s Choice prize of $500.

The $2000 Prize Award will be selected by a panel of four judges, Mr Timothy Fairfax, AM, Grazier, Company Director & Philanthropist, Cr Lew Brennan a fine artist in his own right, Dr Lisa Chandler, Lecturer in Art and Design Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of the Sunshine Coast and John Waldron, Cultural Heritage and Collections Manager, Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

A $500 people’s choice prize will be awarded at the conclusion of the exhibition, patrons can cast their vote during the exhibition.   Entry into the exhibition is $5.

The winning entry will be announced at an Awards Evening at 5 pm, Friday 10 July. Entry fee to the presentation function is $15 and $12.50 for NFA members.

This is a unique opportunity to view the work of the Sunshine Coast’s most talented artists and the only opportunity to see these entries in the one exhibition. The artists have invited their portrait subjects to the Award Evening which will allow the public to not only enjoy the art but to also meet the artist and their subject.

The Archies and Friends Exhibition is a rebirth with a bang for the Visual Arts pillar of the Noosa Federation of the Arts’ said Meg Lawrence, Chairman of the Noosa Federation of the Arts.

We have had a hiatus in this area for many years, mainly due to the energy required for the Dame Joan Sutherland Award.  Now, thanks to some highly motivated NFA members, the Archies and Friends Exhibition has broken the drought, and emerged as what will become one of the Sunshine Coasts major annual events.

We have some of the Coast’s finest artists exhibiting their works of the region’s famous faces and places.   We have the owners of some of the famous faces attending the launch, and we have four of the most prominent art connoisseurs to judge the entries.

Altogether, I think this rebirth will be an outstanding event.  I hope the community will enjoy it, too.’

Most entries are offered for sale to the public and can be previewed after the 12 June on the Noosa Federation of the Arts website   www.nfa.org.au.

Further information and entry forms are available by contacting the Noosa Federation of the Arts on 5474 4898 or from the Noosa Federation of the Arts website.

Portrait of Senator Barnaby Joyce - Recess

Artist's Statement: By Raelean Hall

This is the poetic prose that is on the back of the painting
which came from our dialogue we had during the sitting/interview.
Note about the work:  this representation arose from Barnaby's metaphoric concept
of how he resonates with the mythic character 'Ulysses' in his working career. Even
though he is out taking a break in the deeper waters off Mooloolaba on his annual
holiday, he is constantly bombarded with work issues (hence the sweet call from the
Sirens who stop at nothing to get him back on the job).

He is smiling 'cause this is the place of serenity for him and loves to swim out past the
breakers. Some written details on the yellow paperwork the Sirens are delivering include:
Dissenting Report, confidential, Itinerary, Meeting, Call Frank Immediately, etc.
