The Nationals Senator for Queensland, Barnaby Joyce has welcomed the opportunity to review the discussion paper on reform for Australia’s media industry, released today by Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan.
"The Fourth Estate, media is inherently integral to a strong democracy. Their role often influences political outcomes, so as they have a very powerful position, great care needs to be taken on legislating in this field", Senator Joyce said.
"A diversity of view also protects our freedom and reinforces our standard of living. Regionally specific current affairs, sport and news keep us abreast of our lives in our local community", Senator Joyce said.
“It is important that consumers are involved in the review process. I will be listening closely to what my Queensland constituents, and in particular what reports from small businesses have to say about the potential impact of media ownership reforms,” Senator Joyce said.
“Small businesses have expressed concerns about the ability of getting access to affordable advertising. With The Nationals Central Council meeting coming up, I will be interested to hear what other concerns are raised with the potential further centralisation of the media industry.
“I encourage consumers and small businesses to comment on the discussion paper. Now is the opportunity to ensure the future of the media industry is balanced for all sectors of the community,” Senator Joyce said.
The Government is seeking comment on options outlined in the paper. Submissions should be provided by 18 April 2006, and be addressed to The General Manager, Digital Broadcasting and Spectrum Management, Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, GPO Box 2154, CANBERRA ACT 2601.
Submissions may be provided electronically to trish.barnes@dcita.gov.au. Electronic copies of the paper are available at www.dcita.gov.au/broad/media_reform_options.
