This week in politics

14

The glitch in the comments form has been resolved so please keep posting your intelligent and interesting insights. Contributors have to be congratulated for their good humour, thoughtful mesages and ability to maintain a high standard of discourse, but I would expect nothing less of people interested in what the LNP in Queensland and the National Party in the other states are doing. The big issues to think about this week are the National Broadband Network and how it can help people in regional areas, the Foreign Investment Review Board's deliberations on the Chinalco and OZ Minerals deals to buy into Australian mines and the impact of the proposed Emissions Trading Scheme on industries and individuals.

I read in yesterday's papers (15/04/09) that RIO TINTO already has a viable alternative plan, should its bid to unite with CHINALCO be knocked back.
This being the case, there is really no reason at all for any "necessity" to do a deal with CHINALCO - apart from the Rudd government's apparent desire to handcuff Australia to China and the Chinese government ever more say in the management of this country's resources and affairs. As far as I can see, China is already far too outspoken as regards internal issues in Australia: eg, its 'recommendatrions for Australian action' regarding climate change measures!

Sir,
I do not agree with allowing foreign countries access to our companies under any conditions.China has NEVER backed out of Any countries that she invaded by force of arms or deceit as is the case with Australia. The federal government should be put to trial for actions detrimental to the welfare of Australia.. All the past ones govts too who have not done what they are handsomely paid to do that is to manage the country for the people. For many years now this place has been cut up to allow every foreign investor to rape us.Enough!Nationalise the foreign mobs, give work to Aussies not chinese coolies.
Thanks God for people such as You Sir they give me hope.

Just heard on the news that China is getting very interested in our yellow cake, so interested in fact that they have been buying up as much of our yellow cake mining stock as possible. Our government must have forgotten they are an aggressive nuclear communist country. But don't worry, I'm sure they have guaranteed comrade Rudd that they will only use it for peaceful purposes. And who knows, there maybe some money to be made in the creation here of a nuclear waste dump.

This article explains that even the IPCC knows global warming as it has been spun is fake.

Just watched the Four Corners story and I have decided that Barnaby is my
new best hero. Thankyou for standing up when the rest of the spineless weaklings are laying down. I watch every day with horror as the our elected
representatives spiral further out of control and envisage a future Australia
at the mercy of a small band of foreign controllers, no longer the lucky country. Keep up the fight there is a hell of a lot of people behind you.

Barnaby, I note with interest that the Federal Govt have gone from Fuel Watch to Food Watch to School Watch, populist politics at its best. The qld Govt have also given more power to Work Place health and safety officers than they have to Police, the implications for Rural property holders in particular will soon become evident.I trust my identity will remain confidential .

Barnaby...I wish someone would talk in Parliament about the plight of the elderley in this country. Firstly a lot of them fought in wars, they have worked for very low wages compared to today, had no superranuation and they have paid taxes...yet..the do nothings, refugees, druggos, alcoholics and the homeless get everything for free. I have been living inner city Brisbane for the last seven years and have seen the resourses that are poured into these people....They are housed for free by the Salvation Army.Police, Ambulance and Fire Brigade are constantly called to this establishment and they are fed for free seven times a day .Yet, the poor old pensioner living in the suburbs has to pay $8 for meals -on-wheels and all the costs of housing themselves and wait and wait for a hospital bed. The hospital beds are taken up by the drunks in the valley who fight, kick and glass each other....they then go to emergency via Ambulance get first class medical treatment and walk away with no consequences....It is about time they were made to pay for their treatment including the cost of the Police and Ambulance and the perpetrator made to pay compensation. This is the only way we are going to stop this ridiculous behaviour...long term we are going to have to "pension" off all these people with drug and alcohol induced brain damage.....last year the hospitals in Brisbane closed their operating rooms over Xmas as they were expecting an influx of fight related injuries...How disgusting is this? once again the decent people are made to pay....Lynda

I assume you have seen Lord Monckton's letter to Rudd. He clearly explains that for all the empty symbolism and posturing at Copenhagen, they would have only changed the temperature by 0.02C.
So Rudd tried to strike again with billions of tax money for nothing. The fact he won't give up means he wants a world government run by the UN. Look at the mess they made of Copenhagen and this fool thinks they can run the world. everyone says how clever he is because he talks mumbo jumbo and has reined the art of bad temper but it takes more than that to run a country as proudly diverse as Australia.
We needs dams. We need fast rail. I know fast rail is supposed to be uneconomic but the cost of increasing unproductive infrastructure in Sydney and melbourne versus producitve infrastructure in regional areas has not been calculated I am sure. Also it means you can spread the populations out.
