Biosecurity Australia has made the incredible decision to open Australia up to imports of bananas from the Philippines.
Australia grows 22 million cartons of bananas every year, that’s one for every man, woman and child and we love them, but we don’t need to import any from anywhere else, especially from the Philippines which does not have the same quarantine culture as Australia and has at least 21 pests and diseases that Australia doesn't.
The Senate Standing Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport will question Biosecurity Australia and AQIS officers on Wednesday March 11 and Thursday March 12 about this decision. The only hope banana growers have is that the regulations that are drawn up are so tight that the Filippinos will give up in disgust.
As I told Michael Smith on
4BC in Brisbane today this is bad news for Queensland, bad news for Australia. What are we going to get? An imported product pushing our farmers off their land. The farmers in the Philippines would be happy to put diseased bananas on the boat to wipe out the Australian industry. We have been fighting for years to keep these bananas out.
One of the first things the Prime Minister, Mr Rudd, has done is tip a bucket on Australian farmers. Look at this in light of the Chinalco deal where the state-owned Chinese investment company wants to buy into Rio Tinto. Do you think Australia would have a chance of going to China and buying up their coal mines?
Australia must retain its ability to grow its own food and feed its population. I want Agriculture Minister Tony Burke to explain to the 5000 Australians who work in this $350 million industry: Why are you doing this when you know it is going to end in tears.
