The debate surrounding the future implementation of the abortion drug RU 486 took an interesting turn today following the comments of a leading Victorian obstetrician and gynaecologist that pregnancy was a disease.

Speaking to ABC Radio, Dr John Bowditch a Mildura based physician, made the startlingly remarks when discussing an application made by he and two of his colleagues to the Therapeutic Goods Administration for a licence to prescribe RU 486.

Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce was angered to hear such a frivolous comment from a Medical Professional.

“This comment clearly reflects the attitude held by Dr Bowditch that pregnancy is a disease of some sort. If that were the case than every human being walking around today would be a product of an ailment or infliction,” Senator Joyce said.

“However, RU 486 does not treat ailments or inflictions, it takes human life,” he said.

“Frivolous the remark may have been, yet it underlies a premise of those who wish to mask pregnancy as something other than what it is – the inception of a new human life,” Senator Joyce said.
