SIR: The Howard-Vaile Government late last week released a discussion paper outlining proposals to spend $1 billion on broadband services as a part of the $3.1 billion Connect Australia package.
This funding, secured by the Nationals, is the biggest single boost to regional telecommunications in Australia’s history. It’s a massive win for rural people, their families and businesses.
Inclusive of this funding is $113 million to generate further roll-out of new infrastructure, networks and innovative initiatives to enhance service delivery for essential provisions such as health, education and transport.
To ensure the best possible outcome in terms of funding allocations, I would urge all Queenslanders to make a submission and let the government know what it is you need in terms of future technology.
Submissions are being sought from all interested parties and a copy of the discussion paper can be located online under ‘key issues’ at www.dcita.gov.au.
The closing date for submissions is COB on 18 January 2006.
