This week in politics

Queensland Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce has welcomed tonight's Budget saying it has something for everybody.

"The impact on my former profession as an accountant, with the loss of income tax returns, is an issue but there is more than enough work for accountants to continue with.

"The key advantage in this Budget is the investment in infrastructure and the delivery of tax relief to middle Australia. Our nation has to take into account that we must use this time of prosperity to deliver the platform for the future, enabling the benefit of our prosperity to be delivered to our children.

"This is done through the creation of rail, road and airports – the exemplar of progress, the public manifestation of good management.

"The delivery of $22 billion in Auslink 2 is a statement of this investment in our nation's future and, although you can't build roads and rail overnight, we must start now.

"There are a myriad of advantages in this Budget for the middle income earner; from the raising of the tax rate to 30pc over $30,000 to the reality that for 80pc of Australians the tax rate is now 30pc.

"80pc of Australians are now only having to work Monday and half of Tuesday for the support of the nation before they start working for themselves. Under Labor they worked half the week.

"We must acknowledge the real time increase in the top tax rate over the time of this conservative government from $68,000, as indexed to today's terms, to where it lies after this Budget at $180,000. The clear statement in this is the motivation that a Liberal/National government says to the individual 'there is reward for getting ahead, not a penalty.'

"There are a myriad of advantages in this Budget for those who are doing their part in assisting the aged, the invalid and the infirm to assisting the environment. From carer's grants to grants for water tanks, a Liberal/National Government has not ignored those who help.

"No Budget can deliver everything. Ultimately many will talk about what was missed rather than what was caught but we end the day having everything paid for which means you leave your children an asset, fully paid for, not a debt.
