“The Labor party, today in the Senate, showed they were all over the shop -putting $10 on the nose and $5 on the backside of a horse named "Uranium" and praying the thing runs in two different directions.” Senator Joyce said.
“You cannot support the expansion of uranium mining and then pitch for the philosophical higher ground on our own power generation from the same product. If you think that it is immoral for us to use it, how on earth do you justify sending it to others?
“I hope prior to commencing power generation, any possible uranium power plant is at a level that mitigates, to the most stringent extent, any possible dangers. I acknowledge that in the future, what is now waste product will become one of the primary sources of input into power generation, thus minimising radioactive waste.
“We have the Labor party – Holier than Thou - they don't believe in nuclear power generation, unless it is somewhere else and we make money out of selling uranium to them.
“In South Australia, they have been wearing the leather out of their shoes, lobbying for the expansion of Olympic Dam. Does uranium become inert when it travels over salt water? Wherever that product is going, I imagine it is going to be causing the same problems, or worse, than those we would have here because, in other countries, they may not have the stringent controls we would obviously impose.
“For the Australian people this is another classic example of ‘two bob each way, I am with you but I am with them, and them and them as well’ Kevin politics. This is the Peter Garrett ‘I was president of the ACF but I have changed lately’ politics. Here is the challenge Labor: you either believe in uranium as a product for power generation or you believe it is too dangerous. Fair enough if you do, but why on earth would you mine it?“ Senator Joyce said.
