Queensland Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce would like to express his deepest sympathies on the passing of Sir Robert Sparkes.

Sir Robert passed away on the Gold Coast last night aged 77.

With a membership that extended over 50 years and achievements directly correlated with the success of The Nationals in Queensland, Sir Robert was a giant of a man who made a significant contribution to his state and community.

Sir Robert Sparkes and Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen were instrumental in leading the Nationals for 20 years as the party took Queensland from the poor cousin in the federation to the economic development powerhouse of our nation.

Best remembered for his strength in leadership, Sir Robert has left Queensland an enduring legacy.

“I would like to wish Sir Robert’s family and friends my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.”
