When Senators start taking their constitutional obligations to represent their state over their party seriously I will start listening to their arguments at republican dinner soirees.
The rights of Australia are compromised now by what Senators do not do but are supposed to do. I have not seen a Green, Democrat; Labor definitely, Liberal or my own party do anything but vote along party lines as directed. Yet from these august bodies will come nauseating dissertations on how a republic will emancipate the Australian people from their feudal chains, at Bondi Beach.
The right that I am suppose to feel offended by is the fact that I will not be King of England and even I am not conceited enough to aspire to that. It is a story in itself why politicians will put so much energy into this window dresser. It stands in proxy to other constitutional obligations to the Australian people that have been avoided.
I want the Monarchy to stay as a bell around the Senates neck to remind them that they are not doing their job now. I encourage the Australian people to leave it there till Australia gets its current constitutional rights back that Senators represent their states while reviewing and amending legislation. I encourage Australians to take with the appropriate degree of scepticism any Senator’s argument about their patriotic obligations.
