How Bowen would be affected by the Chinalco deal

The Chinalco deal to increase its stake in Rio Tinto will have ramifications for all Australians. Today I inspected the Abbot Point Coal terminal and am meeting with stakeholders and residents who are keen for another Chinese company, Chalco, to build an alumina refinery at Bowen.

This would generate jobs and millions of dollars for the local economy. If the Chinalco deal goes ahead, this facility could be lost from Bowen, as Melissa Maddison, reports at ABC Online - The Nationals Senate leader says he is concerned about how a North Queensland town will be affected if Chinese resources company Chinalco is allowed to take over mining giant Rio Tinto.

Another Chinese company, Chalco, had planned to build an alumina refinery at Bowen, but that may be scrapped in favour of Gladstone if the Rio takeover deal is approved.

Senator Barnaby Joyce is meeting with Bowen residents and stakeholders today, and says if the Bowen plant is scrapped, it will have a significant impact.

"That just starts to show and focus in on the issues of how big this Rio-Chinalco thing is and how it really affects people and how it could be the mechanism for the loss of jobs in Bowen," he said.

"If this is the way it's going to work in the future, this is yet another reason for us to be highly suspicious of China Inc."

The Chalco project is important to the sustainable development of the Bowen area the majority of the Bowen people want this project to proceed in Bowen. At the public meeting today in Bowen the usual greenie fanatics (mostly from the Mackay Conservation group) were out in force while the hard working men and women of Bowen were out earning a crust.

Chalco will have benefits to the tourism sector by making new accomodation and other developments possible due to the utilisation by construction and civil companies during the 3 year construction perid, water for Bowen from the Burdekin will need to be underwritten by a big water user at the SDA in Bowen and this will result in 10000ha of irrgated land between homehill and bowen being opened up, and the businesses big and small will all benefit from the flow on of jobs and wealth.

For the Chalco proposal to happen it will go through state and federal govt assessment through a EIS process looking at the economic, Social and environmental issues both positive and negative

Can't we get the Governor to fire Anna Bligh; and the Governor-General to fire Kevin Rudd?

I'm tired of our country being "sold off" and "sold out" to Asia (China in particular), but I think a lot of us saw this coming some 25-30 years ago.

If people don't want to become victims of a Green Global Capitalistic Communist government, they need to start jumping up and down in every way possible.

When we turn on our TVs, we get people such as an eminent Brisbane researcher saying, "For every $1.00 invested in research, $3.00 is returned to the GLOBAL economy."

Well I say STUFF the global economy! What about Australia?

It's bad enough that Rumsfeld will make more billions by scaring people to death about the Swine Flu so he can sell his Tamiflu and Relenza.

I'm told he made $2 billion out of the Bird Flu scare alone.
