Queensland Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce believes more attention must be directed toward tax rebates announced in last year’s budget as the debate surrounding childcare funding continues.
“I understand there are many factors at play in this debate and I appreciate they all have a role to play. As an accountant and still with children in early childhood I believe the criteria for tax rebates on childcare must be revisited and alternative arrangements sought,” Senator Joyce said.
“The 30% rebate must apply to all parents who have their children in early childhood services, not just certain groups or centres. Administered effectively these rebates could provide great assistance for families and help reduce the demand for childcare places,” he said.
“Childcare expenses are a substantial factor in the family budget these days with both parents often working and the advent of greater numbers of single parent households. A family’s ability to put their child in care is hindered considerably,” Senator Joyce said.
Existing criteria differentiates between childcare centres and kindergartens. This has left many families unable to derive any tax assistance.
“The current system is convoluted with many draconian requirements and proviso’s and must be simplified to enable parents to reap the benefits,” Senator Joyce said.
The Prime Minister and the Treasurer have both spoken of child care in the context of the budget.
