Senator Joyce said today that he is querying the role of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the number of people policing the reef, compared to the number in liaison with commercial and recreational fishermen.
“During Senate Estimates, the Hon Virginia Chadwick stated that out of 190 staff, there are 4.75 staff delegated to liaising exclusively with commercial and recreational fishers. GBRMPA was uncertain of the numbers in policing roles; obviously, far in excess of 4.75 staff.
“An acknowledgement was made that the hunting of dugongs is still allowed as an indigenous fishing right under the Native Title Act. I have an issue with GBRMPA determining who is indigenous.” Senator Joyce went on to say.
“It is my understanding if someone is charged, the court then determines if they have indigenous fishing rights but, how do GRBMPA make a decision to charge someone on the day?
“I think there are contradictions here, as do many in the community, with excessive policing on some fronts and lack of control on others.”
