Senator for Queensland, Barnaby Joyce, today announced Regional Partnerships program funding of $220,000 to establish a multi-purpose community complex in Clermont.

Senator Joyce said the Australian Government funds would help Belyando Shire Council purchase, transport and install a prefabricated building that will house a library, visitor information centre and art gallery.

“This facility will enhance tourist services, create an area to display local and touring art exhibitions and improve the community’s access to a wide range of resources and library services.

“This Regional Partnerships project will increase economic, employment and training opportunities in the region and increase community involvement through the tourism ambassadors program that will draw volunteers from senior high schools, youth and the general community.

Senator Joyce congratulated the local community for working together to access Regional Partnerships program funding.

“I would particularly like to thank the Mackay Region Area Consultative Committee for helping to bring this project to fruition.

“I would also like to acknowledge the financial support provided by the Queensland Government and the Belyando Shire Council,” he said.

The Regional Partnerships program continues the Australian Government’s approach of working with local communities to support their ideas. A total of $360.9 million is available under the Regional Partnerships program from 2005–06 to 2008–09.

“Since its inception in July 2003, the Regional Partnerships program has, on average, attracted a further three dollars from other sources for every dollar invested by the Australian Government,” he said.

Communities should contact their local Area Consultative Committee if they wish to seek funding through the Regional Partnerships program.
