Barnaby's Blog

Well I have just watched my nation’s Parliament at work. Not in the Cabinet or the Chamber but in the Senate Courtyard rolling press conferences.

The result of the Mining Resource Rent Tax vote was that it was off  because of some stumbling Windsor position on CSG when in reality, as he always does, he was going to rollover for Labor so as expected he had a chat then he changed his mind and it was back on, then Oakeshott said that he was sort of where Windsor was with something random about the Henry Tax Review, then Wilkie said it was on but different and then Bob Brown said it was off if Wilkie’s different position was on.

Yes we can run a country like this, this is totally politically sane. After another two years of this chaos the best we will be able to say about our government is that it is very entertaining.

Very similar to: What is your surgeon like? Well there are a fair few of them and they argue a lot about what they are going to cut off but they are very, very entertaining.

I'm not sure where the insanity is.

The government had a policy before the election, and they convinced the majority of the members of the House of Representatives to vote for it after the election.

It is only insanity if you cannot think beyond a two-party system.

Yes. They're like a huge grub farm Barnaby. And I'm very concerned that Tony and his crew are not really aggressive enough.

"best we will be able to say about our government is that it is very entertaining."

Barnaby,

You have got that bit right and it is a sensible coping mechanism and the realisation that they can't stay in power forever. So better to laugh than cry.

Just couldn't let this one go by Senator Penny Wong just said in question time that the "Coalition was spending money they don't have". Seems I am mistaken, I thought the Coalition is in opposition therefore can't spend or do anything. If it is a reference of when the Coalition gets into government then I am sure what they are left with is problematic with all the debt.

Windsor independant? Oakeshott thinking? None of the so called Independents will vote against Gillard no matter what the bill. They want to see out the next two years and to do that they have to ensure Gillard survives. Tony worried about CSG and wants science yet refuses to look at the real science that says CO2 has little to no effect on our climate and ergo his support for the CO2 tax is based on a lie. On many lies and a lot of poor science in fact. That fool Oakeshott is just as deluded.

Abbott needs to do a Harper. The science and even the IPCC is on side. AGW is a dead duck flapping. We have been conned.

Im sure where the insanity is.

It is where there are 2 individuals in this majority of Reps that have polluted this legislation by demanding constraints upon a industry they individually know nothing about. Brown for his revenue ideology and Wilkie for his containment ideology. They do have something in common though, they are Tasmanian. Now don't get me started about the uselessness of that State to the Commonwealth due to similar ideological nitwits.

I love it when Barnaby talks about sanity. It's one of many traits he lacks.

Thankfully the country is being run extremely well. It's just a shame that the opposition isn't up to the job.

If this comedy show wasn't costing us so much Barnaby, it would be funny.

In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of
Edinbrough, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some
2,000 years prior:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a
permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until
the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts
from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for
the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with
the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal
policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship."

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of
history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations
always progressed through the following sequence:

>From bondage to spiritual faith;
>From spiritual faith to great courage;
>From courage to liberty;
>From liberty to abundance;
>From abundance to complacency;
>From complacency to apathy;
>From apathy to dependence;
>From dependence back into bondage."
>The Obituary follows.

Ineptocracy (in-ept-o-cra-cy) - a system of government where the least
capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and
where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or
succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the
confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

Well done Mr Joyce

I believe the problem we have is a Government with no power at all.The only way they can remain as a Government is to agree to do everything the Greens and Independents want,even if they don't agree with it.
Mr Joyce to say the Greens\Labor Government is either sane or entertaining must mean you have a very strange sense of humor.

After the speaker debacle, the jobs of the three amigos are more secure, and less will be seen of them as decission makers on important issues. How could Slipper sell himself to Labour surely there is a law against Parliamentary insider trading for personal gain? I call it corruption of the highest order, if Slipper's remuneration jumps by $100,000 what is in it for Jenkins? The odour of corrupt inducements to gain a majority needs is so strong which warrants, at least, a Senate Enquiry, at best, a Ropyal Commission and all affected bills suspended.
