It is with deep regret that we are again today sending on behalf of the nation, our sympathies to the families of three soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan. They were all from the Sydney-based 2nd Commando Regiment.
Sixteen Australians have now lost their lives since operations in Afghanistan began in 2001.
Private Scott Travis Palmer, 27, wason his third tour of Afghanistan.
PTE Palmer leaves behind his loving parents and brother.

Private Timothy James Aplin, 32, was on his second tour to Afghanistan and he was serving with the SOTG as a team demolitions specialist.

Private Benjamin Adam Chuck, 27, leaves behind his parents, one brother, one sister, and his partner.
PTE Chuck was the Patrol Medic within his sniper team.

Our thoughts are also with the other members of the team who were wounded and extend our hopes that they will all recover quickly from their injuries, some of which are serious.

Yes, war is a terrible thing. Our hearts go out to those who have been left behind, both on the battlefield and on the home base.

A friend who fought in Vietnam says he wants all wars to be fought using a pen, since the pen is mightier than the sword.

He thinks that national leaders are responsible for ongoing negotiations, until they can find a bipartisan solution to conflicts.
